New Year’s Nails

December 31, 2011 § Leave a comment

I am a girl on a budget and so affording a day at the spa to get my nails painted isn’t always possible. However, tonight is a night for glitter, Champagne, dance, and high heels so I took a break from work this afternoon and glammed up my nails, by myself! All you need is a funky fun shade (I chose an obnoxious turquoise to ring in the new year) and a glitter top coat. Silver matches every color whereas gold can get tricky. See my results below. Not bad, huh?

Pleasure in Patterns

I have always been a collector of prints. My bed is a collision of polkadots, gingham and floral prints. Though chaotic, it works! I have decided to implement the same design standards to my outfit (at least for today). Even my socks – not yet photographed – carry a navajo print. A scarf is the most perfect accessory to embellish a plain tee and leggings.

Camera Phone Chronicles

So I may have fallen a few weeks short of posting my Friday phone captures. Can I blame it on the hectic Holidays? Probably not. Regardless, I am here today with a few shots I have rounded from this week of best friends, tattoos, the ocean and even a piece of jewelry.

DIY: Mason jar collage

December 28, 2011 § 2 Comments

Decorating a mason jar with inspirational words or snippets from your favorite novels, cutouts of trendy fabrics, or old diary entires gives those bobby pins you collect, the make-up brushes you store, and the colored pencils you have been meaning to organize, a dainty and artistic home!

I was feeling the after-bash blues yesterday. The holidays came and went far too fast. I decided I had to do something creative (or just get out from the underneath the pile of books and magazines on my bed). I took a box of mason jars from the cabinet and crafted somewhat of a collage on glass.

What you need:

  • Mason jars (see local hardware store), size is of personal preference
  • Newspaper, pages from old books, magazine cutouts, etc.
  • Mod Podge and/or Elmer’s multipurpose spray adhesive
  • Fabric (that which you are willing to cut up and dismantle a bit)
  • Fabric scissors
  • A paint brush

I have envelopes full of magazine pages, newspaper articles, and quotes from various literature. Having finally decided to make something useful of all these scraps, I took a paint brush dipped in Mod Podge to my glass mason jar. Note: Mod Podge is super sticky once dry; your hands may become coated in thick film – just wash with warm water and a generous amount of soap afterwards). Arrange pieces of your fabric amongst your other collaging objects. I even used some tissue paper as a background accent to certain quotes. Use your paint brush to smooth any bumps that may arrise when pasting the paper down on top of the uneven mason jar surface. The process is easy and the product is worthy of home showcase, yes?

*I have since created a New Year’s resolution that I will continue to do something artsy once a week. Imagine the collection of crafts I will have by the end of 2012!
